Mark Vaccariello Memorial Fund
“Mr. Lakota, 1979” was the
caption under Mark Vaccariello’s name in his Lakota High School yearbook. An
outstanding young man faced with an overwhelming battle, fought it with great
courage, spirit and endurance and was never without a charming smile!
Mark touched the hearts of many in
his fight with cancer. Students, parents, faculty and family members
were all inspired by the tenacity of this outstanding teen. Struggling
each day to continue participating in school activities and his studies.
Mark lost his three year battle with cancer in his Freshman year.
Today, Mark’s spirit lives on
through the Mark Vaccariello Scholarship Fund. Mark’s example
continues to encourage those who face similar struggles and like Mark,
chooses to attack them head on.
The Mark Vaccariello Scholarship Fund
awards two scholarships each May—a student at Lakota East and
a student at Lakota West High Schools. It is given to the student(s)
who most exemplifies the qualities Mark possessed. These qualities
include courage, spirit, determination, and a positive outlook toward
the challenges of life.
Since the fund was established in 1980,
more than 50 students have received this prestigious award to assist
them in their ongoing desire to succeed in the face of adversity.
